Pakistani Actress Questions Lack of Accountability After Police Disperse Karachi Sit-In by Families Seeking Release of Sailors Held by Somali Pirates
KARACHI (G.B News Daily) Pakistani actor Hania Aamir has criticised what she described as a recurring pattern in Pakistan of moving from one tragedy to another without accountability or meaningful resolution, after a video showing police action against a sit-in in Karachi circulated on social media.
The video, shared by Aamir on her Instagram story, showed police disrupting a sit-in staged near Shahrah-e-Faisal by family members of Pakistani sailors who have allegedly been held hostage by Somali pirates since April.
Aamir described the pattern as “deeply frightening” and questioned the lack of accountability between one crisis and the next.
She also asked how much more the public was “expected to witness” before meaningful change takes place.
Her comments came a day after some family members of the sailors claimed they were briefly detained by police on the morning of a planned march.
Police, however, maintained that officers had only “engaged” with the protesters in an effort to persuade them to vacate the area near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs liaison office and denied using force to disperse them.
The sit-in is the latest in a series of protests held over the past five months by the sailors’ families, who have been demanding government action to secure their loved ones’ release. The protests have so far failed to produce significant progress, according to the families.
Aamir is not the only Pakistani celebrity to have spoken out in support of the sailors. Actors Mahira Khan and Sabeena Farooq, along with musician Talha Anjum, have also publicly called for efforts to secure their safe recovery.
The latest Instagram post is in line with Aamir’s history of using her large social media following to comment on issues beyond her acting career.
At a UK Parliament event last year, where she received the Star of Pakistan Award, Aamir spoke about the importance of humanity transcending political differences.
She has also openly discussed her own personal struggles, including a difficult period she described earlier this year as containing both “the absolute worst and the absolute best” experiences of her life.
Aamir was last seen on screen in Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum and is currently attached to Netflix’s Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo, alongside Sanam Saeed, Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan.
